Foundation Model

Large, pre-trained model that serves as the basis for many specialized applications.

Definition

A foundation model is a large, pre-trained AI model that serves as the basis for numerous specialized applications. Instead of training a new model from scratch for each task, you take a foundation model and adapt it – via fine-tuning, prompting, or RAG. GPT-4, Claude, and Llama are examples of foundation models.
